Alonso (44) and Hamilton (41) are not only the oldest drivers on the 2026 F1 grid but also the most experienced in Grand Prix history. The Aston Martin driver has 429 race starts, while the Ferrari ace follows with 384. However, Ralf Schumacher believes their longevity has run its course and they should step aside.

According to the German, Lewis Hamilton “has no chance against Leclerc in the long run.” Although the seven-time world champion has started the new regulatory era closer to his teammate after a difficult 2025, Schumacher insists Hamilton will again be beaten by Charles Leclerc and should hang up his helmet at the end of the year.

“Hamilton and Alonso have had a wonderful career in Formula 1, but it’s time they vacate their seats at the end of the year and give youngsters a chance,” Schumacher said. He acknowledged that many might hate him for the comments about Hamilton, but emphasized that the Briton “has achieved everything he could possibly achieve” in motorsport’s pinnacle and should make way.

The German is clear about who should replace Hamilton at Ferrari: Oliver Bearman. He believes the young Briton, after a strong 2025 season with Haas, would give Charles Leclerc a much tougher fight than the aging seven-time champion.

The futures of both veterans are in their own hands. Fernando Alonso’s contract expires at the end of this year (he will be 45), making his continuation one of the biggest unknowns for 2027. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, signed a 2+1 deal with Ferrari, giving him the option to race one more year at Maranello if he wishes.
