India’s young women’s football team saw their historic campaign at the 2026 AFC Women’s U17 Asian Cup come to an end with a 3-0 defeat against tournament hosts China in the quarterfinal on Monday.

The Indian side, known as the Young Tigresses, had made headlines earlier by securing their first-ever quarterfinal berth in the competition. They achieved this with a dominant 4-0 victory over Lebanon in their final group stage match on Friday.
The stakes were high, as the winner of this quarterfinal would earn a direct spot in the upcoming FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
India started the match with a solid defensive structure and created a couple of promising one-on-one chances through long balls. However, they failed to convert those opportunities. A defensive lapse allowed China to break the deadlock in the 38th minute, as an unmarked forward tapped in a cross from the right flank. Shortly after, a poorly timed tackle from Ritu in the box led to a penalty, which China converted to double their lead just before halftime.
In the second half, China maintained their high press and dominated possession. India struggled to leave their own half and rarely threatened the Chinese box. Despite a good diving save from goalkeeper Munni in the 66th minute to keep the score at 2-0, China sealed the victory with a third goal in the 90th minute after India’s defense was caught ball-watching.
The Indian U17 women’s team’s journey ended in the quarterfinals, extending their wait for a return to the World Cup by at least another year. While the defeat is disappointing, the team’s historic qualification and fight remain a significant achievement for Indian women’s football.
