Noah Shachtman recalled the chaotic experience of reporting the story during New York’s bitterly cold winter. He noted that some sources insisted on remaining outside throughout the entire process, firmly believing they were being followed or watched.
The sources included both current and former members of the Madison Square Garden security team, many of whom had backgrounds in law enforcement or intelligence. According to Shachtman, public records show that former FBI agents, CIA officers, and New York City police officers have joined the Garden’s security staff. He described these individuals, despite their professional backgrounds, as being terrified and essentially part of what he termed James Dolan’s “deep state.”
